Online competitions
"All you may want to know" guideline
How online format appeared
The idea of online competitions was born during COVID times, when travels were extreimly restricted and organization of events of any kind was forbidden on the most territories of the world. People kept riding and something that would challenge them and motivate to grow was necessary. The CWSA started their series of online competitions that year.
There were 2 types of them: online drop 45 & online modules.
Online drop 45 – competitions for which you basically upload the video of your ride taken on phone or gopro.
Besides all disputes we want to highlight first, that based on world situation and simple inability of any live event happenings during that period, that was a great decision!
Second, that was an amazing format that pushed a lot of NEW people to participate in wakesurf competitions due to very easy entrance into these ones. No travel expenses, no mental pressure, unlimited tries.
And now we see athletes, who started to compete online, getting challenged and motivated by it, moved forward to live events as soon as they appeared again.
This type was taken very “on the fence”. Athletes started to dispute that this format has nothing to do with competitions as they are.
And its true. Online drop 45 competitions should not be compared with real ones. It's different.
In online you can make as many attempts as you want. Simply keep riding until you get your best line filmed. Athletes make their videos behind the boat they are familiar with, choosing the best conditions from what they have at their place. Chances to get your best line are unlimited.

So, in terms of putting athletes in fairly equal conditions, to compare their riding skills...
It is not about online drop 45.

However, on another hand we can say that all riders have equal possiblilities. They ALL have unlimited number of attempts, and they ALL can choose the boat and set up they prefer to ride.
I enjoy watching videos from online drop 45, because these ones show probably the highest level performance from the athletes. Besides it's impressive, it's always good to know how your division overall level of riding looks like at the moment.

Online drop45 competitions NOW
Even though travel restrictions are out of the game, it is still challenging to organize a big event and put all riders together. Therefore to provide an easy opportunity to all riders from different parts of the world to compete with each other, the CWSA decided to leave a couple of online events in their schedule on a regular basis.
And even more, participation in at least one online drop 45 event stays as a requirement for World Championship invitation.

How to enter them?
  1. You need to create a personal account on the CWSA website
  2. Choose division in which you plan to compete this season (your riding level - keep in mind, that you can upgrade your division at any moment, but not allowed to switch for a lower one after).
  3. Go to the approved event list for 2024, and register - that's it!
What are the rules?
  1. You must upload UNEDITED video in HORIZONTAL format!
  2. The moment when you drop the rope must be recorded on video and your 45 seconds run is counted from the first trick you land.
  3. All ride is one line. If you fall - that's obviously the end of your video.
  4. Any TOUCH of the boat during your run with the board or body leads to disqualification.
  5. Girls (mostly, but boys also) pay attention, that your boot must be COVERED during the ride. No bikini at this point. Use shorts to be sure. Or wetsuit is weather demands.
  6. You must be in a LIFE JACKET (always when you are wakesurfing! But talking about competitions now - break of this rule leads to automatic disqualification).
  7. NO COACHING during your ride.
My tips for online drop 45
Do not register until you get the video that you like :))
You will feel less pressure while filming it + if you don't get a successful and satisfying run within announced period, you will not loose your registration fee.

If competition is announced, do horizontal videos all the time when you go for a ride.
Even if you haven't decided will you participate or not. That will bring you more chances and more videos within you can choose your best one.

Start your run with your hardest and unstable trick.
That's how you will get your best competition video faster. If each time you start your line with easy tricks trying to land something hard in the end... You will have to repeat filming your first part of the run for many-many times and spend a lot of time on that. Or you can do as many attempts as you need for your hardest trick and then easily and fast close the run with your basics.
